Albania continues to amaze and surprise me. I had my doubts but it's actually a really interesting place. It's been frightening to learn about the despot Enver Hoxha and life in a country totally cut off from the rest of the world. But great to see the progress it is making. So much building going on. Unfortunately the infrastructure isn't keeping up, but give it 20 years and it will be a very different country. They're working on joining the EU but hoping everyone else hasn't left by the time they do!! Everyone is so friendly. From intrepidation to enjoyment and hope.
Riding out today, we had bike paths for about the first 10km. Who'd had thought.

The freeway below us heading towards the tunnel through the mountain. The sign tells how much it cost. Given there are 75 Albanian Lek to AU$1, there were lots of 0's in the figure! |
There was a great restaurant at the top at 800m. Had the best lamb I've had in a long time.
More views, then a huge descent into the town of Elbasan.
Our airbnb tonight cost AU$30!!
Tomorrow we're off to Lake Ohrid and North Macedonia. I now have an idea where all these countries are!!
