Another border crossing. Albania into Greece. We were stopped by a marketing crew from 'Smile Albania' to ask us about our experience in Albania, and we had lots of positive to say. The only negative I could think of was the amount of rubbish everywhere. They're working on it! They wanted a photo of us.
A couple of days ago I mentioned about the groove on the edge of the road where they must have layed some cables. Today, at least the groove was on the road side of the white line so much easier for riding, plus we had a really wide verge today. You don't want to drop your wheel into it.
After the border crossing, we had the option of riding down the freeway. It was basically empty and we were allowed to, with a couple of lit tunnels to avoid the climbs. But we decided to stay on the minor roads, which involved dirt for the first 10km and a climb up to 1200m. It was loose and gravelling on one of the descents so I had a minor fall. Only a tiny bit of skin missing.
Once back on the bitumen it was a lovely ride. We stopped in one of the tiny hillside towns for some lunch and one of the locals bought us tsipouro - a nice welcome to Greece, perhaps not great for cycling though!
We're now in the tourist town of Kastoria where we'll have a rest day. Staying in a really nice family run hotel.
