31/7/19 Shkoder to Lezhe

60km  Total 2,749km

Nothing much to report about today.  We left our airbnb and headed into Shkoder - Albania's 2nd largest city.   We've now got 2 Albanian sim cards and some Albanian Lek (75lek = $1).  Very busy roads in Shkoder with bikes, motor bikes and cars going everywhere, but everyone seems very patient and gives us plenty of room.

The road out of Shkoder was very busy, but again, all the traffic was great.  Buses and trucks often give a gentle toot to warn that they're coming past.  We ended up on some dirt roads to keep us off the main roads.  Again all good.

Unfortunately there's lots of rubbish around, particularly in waterways and on the outskirts of towns.
Albania was an entirely closed country until 1991, lead by dictator Enver Hoxha (pronounced Hodgeha) from 1944 until his death in 1985.  It still has quite a way to go to come away from its communist past, but is a member of NATO and hopes to become a member of the EU.  Infrastructure is poor - potholed roads and footpaths, old cars bellowing exhaust fumes, lots of pollution in the air.  But so far the people seem lovely.
